Shyam Sankar, COO, and Kathleen McMahon, Life Sciences Lead, on improving lives across the healthcare value chain
In our August 2022 earnings call, we shared that Palantir’s healthcare business has grown 267% between 2020 and the first half of 2022. For those that have been watching closely, this exponential growth isn’t a surprise.
Over the last two years, our software, Palantir Foundry, has powered critical infrastructure and operations in the public and private sector responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. From streamlining PPE supply chains to monitoring COVID-19 Genetic Mutations, our role in addressing one of the largest public health crises of our time has required us to become the most comprehensive health tech startup you’ve never heard of.
Beyond COVID-19 response
We have been investing in and developing alongside our healthcare customers long before COVID-19, and the impact of this ongoing work scales far beyond pandemic response. We supported governments and industries as they worked to mitigate losses caused by inflexible and siloed systems, building new capabilities with lasting utility. From ensuring the efficient, equitable distribution of vaccines to forecasting available hospital beds, our customers have continued to rely on Foundry to power mission-critical work amidst preternatural constraint and crisis.
Palantir has been trusted by leading healthcare and life sciences institutions, who remain on the frontlines of the toughest public health challenges, to solve their hardest problems — from drug discovery to care delivery — at speed.
Our solutions are deployed at the cutting edge of biomedical innovation. At the National Institutes of Health, Foundry is used to help accelerate critical research. Recently, the COVID Cohort Collective (NC3) used Foundry to analyze a collection of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) available for COVID-19 research to better understand long COVID. Analysis that once took months can now be done in hours, while still ensuring that patient privacy is protected and organizations maintain control over their most sensitive data.
The same principles apply in the private sector, where Foundry can unlock new paradigms of research for our pharmaceutical customers. Our software is used to harmonize clinical trial data, preclinical safety data, and real world evidence to create a comprehensive view of disease progression, groundbreaking in both scope and granularity. This foundation accelerates the entire cycle of drug discovery and development, from translational biomarker discovery to the use of external control arms in clinical studies.
Improving outcomes across the healthcare value chain
Our impact goes far beyond research. Every day, Foundry helps improve lives. England’s National Health Service (NHS) relied on it to allocate over 9 billion items of PPE and deliver over 120M vaccinations, creating a single source of truth for vaccine roll out. In Japan, SOMPO uses Foundry in nursing homes to deliver responsive, personalized care — planning that took 30 minutes is now made at a glance. And after supporting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with their COVID-19 response, we’re now helping the U.S. government respond to Monkeypox, creating a single view for decision-making and efficient vaccine allocation at scale.
This effort will continue beyond any singular public health crisis. We work to create agile operating systems that not only address current demand, but are capable of withstanding the uncertainty of tomorrow.
As care systems continue to struggle with elective care backlogs, our work in hospital operations is reducing length of stay on complex discharges and increasing operating room utilization, allowing for more patients to be seen and treated every day. Foundry is now being used to unlock the capacity of existing workforces, allowing hospitals to achieve target staffing ratios resulting in opportunities to cut expensive travel agency spend by 10%.
Our software supports organizations across the globe in developing solutions capable of innovating within constraint. Concordance, a major US healthcare distributor, is using Foundry to build an end-to-end distribution network, enabling more effective delivery of lifesaving products to where they are needed the most. And in the Life Sciences industry, our work in biomanufacturing helps our customers ensure high quality, high yield production even as supply chains and manufacturing partners evolve.
Building healthier communities
At every stage of the healthcare value chain, our customers are using our software to drive transformation and accelerate outcomes for the people, communities, and societies they serve. We are incredibly proud to serve as a trusted partner to their mission-critical work.
We’re just getting started. As singular crises wax and wane, we remain committed to powering the institutions that our world relies upon to produce the outcomes that matter.
When it has to work, there is only Palantir.
